Climate change is intensifying challenges such as floods, river erosion, waterlogging, salinity and drought in Bangladesh, Water Resources Minister Md Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee has said.
He called for stronger World Bank partnership in sustainable water resources management through integrated and long-term planning to address the growing threats.
The minister made the remarks during a meeting with World Bank Country Mission Chief in Bangladesh Jean Pesme at the Ministry of Water Resources at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Tuesday.
“Climate change is steadily increasing various risks and challenges in the water resources sector. Long-term and integrated planning is needed to address these problems,” Anee said.
He said the government was undertaking various initiatives to reduce the impacts of river erosion and floods, alongside dredging and re-excavating rivers, canals and water bodies across the country.
The minister urged the World Bank to further expand its support for ensuring sustainable management of Bangladesh’s water resources.
Jean Pesme reaffirmed the World Bank’s commitment to continuing its support for developing Bangladesh’s water resources and strengthening climate resilience.
He emphasised integrated planning, the use of modern technology, institutional capacity building and sustainable development.
The meeting also discussed progress on ongoing water resources projects, potential areas of future cooperation and other issues of mutual interest.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Water Resources and the World Bank attended the meeting.
