A case has been sought against 14 officials and employees of the July Shaheed Smriti Foundation over allegations of demanding money in exchange for a government benefit cheque, assault, torture and attempted murder of a man injured during the July uprising.
July fighter Gias Uddin filed the case petition with Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam’s court on Tuesday.
The plaintiff’s lawyer, Yamin Mia, said the court recorded the plaintiff’s statement and ordered the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate the allegations.
The accused are Foundation officials and employees Iftekhar Hossain, Sabrina Afroze Sebonti, Saidur Rahman Shahid, Mehedi Hasan Prince, Sagar, Afzalur Rahman Sayem, Harun-or-Rashid, Kamrul Hossain, Alif, Zahid, Momenuzzaman Dipu, Sazzad Mostafa, Fatema Afrin Payel and Yasin Molla.
According to the case petition, Gias Uddin went to the foundation to collect a Tk300,000 cheque as a July uprising fighter. After failing to receive it, he informed senior figures at the NCP office in Banglamotor, who assured him that he would receive the cheque if he returned to the foundation.
He later returned to the July Shaheed Smriti Foundation on May 3 last year. The accused allegedly demanded Tk150,000—half of the cheque amount—in exchange for encashing and handing over the cheque.
When Gias refused to pay, the accused allegedly took him to a private room, where several of them assaulted him. He allegedly lost consciousness after his head struck a metal rod when he was pushed against a wall.
The petition further alleges that after he regained consciousness, he found himself bleeding and was subsequently taken to the lift area and left there. His son later took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Gias reportedly went to the police to file a case, but the authorities allegedly delayed taking the complaint and later advised him to seek legal action through the court.
