The government has announced a special incentive package for installing rooftop solar power systems with battery storage as part of its efforts to promote renewable energy and strengthen the country’s long-term energy security.
The Power Division issued a notification on Tuesday, setting out the incentive scheme for rooftop solar systems.
Under the notification, the maximum cost of generating electricity from a rooftop solar system, including batteries, has been set at Tk 8 per unit. A 20 per cent profit margin and an additional 11.25 per cent premium will be added to the cost, bringing the incentive price to Tk 10.50 per unit.
Customers who can install their solar systems at a cost lower than the prescribed Tk 8 per unit will be entitled to treat the savings as their profit.
Under the Net Metering Guidelines 2025, customers who install rooftop solar systems by 28 February 2027 and supply surplus electricity to the national grid after meeting their own consumption will receive Tk 10.50 per unit for the electricity supplied.
The rate will remain applicable for three years, until 28 February 2030, according to the notification.
Electricity distribution companies will be responsible for maintaining records of participating customers, calculating the amount of electricity supplied to the national grid and keeping records of electricity prices, including the incentive component.
The incentive payments will be transferred directly to customers’ bank or mobile financial service accounts. Cash payments will not be allowed under the scheme.
However, solar systems installed after 28 February 2027 will not qualify for the incentive.
The notification also stipulates that solar panels, batteries, inverters, meters and other equipment used in the systems must comply with the technical standards prescribed by the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) and the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA).
The Power Division’s One-Stop Service Centre will provide policy-related assistance to customers seeking to install rooftop solar systems. Necessary support will also be available from electricity distribution companies’ offices at district and upazila levels.
The government notification came into effect on 1 September 2026.
The scheme is expected to encourage households and other electricity consumers to invest in rooftop solar generation while allowing surplus power to be fed into the national grid, helping increase the share of renewable energy in the country’s power mix.
