Dhaka: The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) of the Bangladesh Water Development Board has warned that short-term flooding could occur in 10 districts within the next 24 to 72 hours due to heavy rainfall.
According to the weather forecast for Wednesday (September 2), heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in the Chattogram, Sylhet, Rangpur and Mymensingh divisions, as well as in adjoining upstream areas of India.
FFWC Executive Engineer Sardar Uday Rayhan said continued heavy rainfall could delay improvement in the flood situation in Chattogram, Bandarban and Cox’s Bazar, although conditions are expected to improve gradually.
He said low-lying areas along rivers in Feni, Chattogram, Khagrachhari, Sylhet, Netrokona, Sherpur, Mymensingh, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram and Gaibandha are at risk of short-term flooding.
Water levels in the Surma and Kushiyara rivers, along with other rivers in Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions, may rise over the next two days, potentially worsening flooding in low-lying areas.
Meanwhile, water levels in the Muhuri, Feni and Selonia rivers in the southeastern region are expected to rise and could exceed danger levels at several points.
In contrast, water levels in the Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers are expected to gradually decline, indicating an improvement in conditions in nearby low-lying areas.
In northern Bangladesh, water levels in the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers are forecast to continue rising over the next three days. The FFWC has advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert as river levels continue to rise.
