Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed authorities to take urgent steps to protect the Gulshan-Banani-Baridhara lake system, prevent water pollution and ensure integrated waste management in surrounding areas.
The directive came at a meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office on Monday(July 6) to review sewerage connections in Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara and Niketan, as well as plans to restore the lake’s environmental health.
The prime minister emphasised coordinated action by relevant ministries, city corporations and agencies to manage waste properly, curb pollution and safeguard the lake ecosystem.
Officials informed the meeting that short-, medium- and long-term plans have been prepared to address the problem.
The discussion highlighted the need to install sewage treatment plants (STPs) in the area to prevent untreated waste from entering the lake.
Participants also reviewed measures for regular cleaning of the lake and its canals, removal of solid waste and maintaining natural water flow.
Special attention was given to preventing waste discharge from nearby settlements, including the Korail slum, into the lake.
Ministers, city corporation administrators, RAJUK officials and senior government representatives attended the meeting.
