A British-Bangladeshi man has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison by a London court for embezzling nearly £92,000 intended for cancer research.
Tamim Chowdhury, 29, reportedly used the stolen money to finance his lavish wedding and honeymoon, repay personal debts, withdraw cash and purchase luxury goods.
The case began in 2023 when unusual financial transactions raised suspicions. Santander subsequently froze his account and seized £42,866.25 remaining in it.
Following a complaint from Breast Cancer Now, a specialist team from the City of London Police launched an investigation. Tamim was arrested at his home in June 2025.
Investigating officer Yusuf Mirza described the theft of money intended for potentially life-saving cancer work as a serious betrayal of public trust.
The court ultimately sentenced Tamim to 30 months in prison for the offence.
