The Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata has advised Bangladeshi citizens not to travel to the Indian city without confirming hotel bookings in advance, following the temporary closure of a number of residential hotels after a deadly fire on August 19.
The mission issued the advisory on Thursday, warning that Bangladeshis travelling to Kolkata for medical treatment or other purposes could face accommodation shortages.
According to the notice, local authorities temporarily closed a number of residential hotels and restaurants considered vulnerable to accidents following the tragic fire.
The authorities have indicated that it could take more than a month for some of the establishments to reopen after complying with safety requirements and other regulations.
The Bangladesh Deputy High Commission has therefore strongly advised travellers to confirm hotel bookings before travelling to Kolkata to avoid accommodation problems after arrival.
Travellers have also been urged to verify the hotel’s current operational status, room availability and location before beginning their journey.
The advisory placed particular emphasis on patients travelling to Kolkata for medical treatment and their accompanying persons.
It said companions of patients should ensure accommodation is booked before arriving in the city and verify the availability and validity of their hotel reservations.
Travellers seeking medical treatment have also been advised to check the distance between their hotel and the hospital, as well as the availability of other necessary facilities, before travelling.
