Mirza Fakhrul to visit Thakurgaon for first time as President

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is set to visit his home district of Thakurgaon for the first time since assuming office. He will travel to Thakurgaon on Sunday for a two-day visit. Various preparations have been made across the town to welcome him, with roads and key locations decorated for the occasion.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was sworn in as president on August 21 this year. During his visit, he will offer prayers at the graves of his parents and meet local dignitaries and relatives. He will also attend a civic reception organized by a citizens’ committee. On the second day of his visit, he is scheduled to lay the foundation stone of Thakurgaon University.

According to a notice signed by the president’s protocol officer, Abul Kalam Lutfor Rahman, the president will arrive by helicopter at Shaheed Mohammad Ali Stadium in Thakurgaon at around 11:45am on Sunday. From there, he will proceed to the Circuit House, where he will receive a guard of honor.

Later, Mirza Fakhrul will visit the Senuya Cemetery in the town to offer prayers at his parents’ graves. At 3pm, he will attend a reception organized by the citizens’ committee at the large field of Thakurgaon Government Boys’ High School.

After the reception, he will go to his family home, where he will meet local dignitaries and relatives. He will spend the night at his residence.

On Monday morning, the president will again meet local dignitaries and relatives. He will then lay the foundation stone of Thakurgaon University. Afterwards, he will return to the Circuit House to receive a guard of honor before leaving Thakurgaon by helicopter for Dhaka.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was born on January 26, 1948. He spent his childhood and adolescence in the Kalibari area of Thakurgaon town. He completed his secondary education at Thakurgaon Government Boys’ High School and higher secondary education at Dhaka College. He later earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics from the University of Dhaka.

Mirza Fakhrul became involved in politics during his student years. In 1972, he joined the Bangladesh Civil Service (Education) cadre and began his career as a lecturer at Dhaka College. After serving in various government positions, he returned to teaching.

In 1988, he resigned from government service and was elected chairman of Thakurgaon Municipality.
