A female inmate of Jashore Central Jail gave birth to a baby boy inside an ambulance while being taken to hospital for treatment.
The woman, identified as Brishti Khatun, 19, was in the ambulance when she went into labor. Following the incident, the prison authorities welcomed the mother and newborn with flowers and distributed sweets among those present.
The incident took place around 9pm on Friday (September 4) in the Churamonkati area of Jashore. Both the mother and the newborn are currently in good health.
According to sources at Jashore Central Jail, Brishti Khatun was being transported by ambulance from Jhenaidah to Khulna Medical College Hospital for advanced medical treatment. When the ambulance reached the Churamonkati area around 9pm, her labor pains intensified. She subsequently gave birth to a baby boy inside the ambulance.
After learning about the incident, the Jashore Central Jail authorities immediately arranged the necessary medical care and support for the mother and newborn. The newborn was provided with clothes, a mosquito net, bedding, a towel, napkins, diapers, olive oil and other essential items.
Abid Ahmed, jailer of Jashore Central Jail, said the arrangements were made in accordance with the instructions of the Inspector General of Prisons.
“From a humanitarian perspective, we have ensured all necessary support for the mother and newborn. Both the mother and the baby are currently in good health,” he said.
The prison authorities said they would continue providing necessary assistance for the newborn’s healthy and secure future.
