Police have arrested a man in Moulvibazar’s Rajnagar for allegedly strangling his wife, burying her body eight feet underground in the family yard, and later attempting to stage her disappearance.

Nineteen days after the killing, police recovered the partially decomposed body of 38-year-old Jaheda Begum from the yard on Monday (July 6), following the confession of her husband, Alamgir Hossain, in the presence of an executive magistrate.

According to police and local sources, Alamgir allegedly strangled his wife on the night of June 20 following a family dispute. He then dug a pit in the yard and buried the body to conceal the crime.

In an attempt to avoid suspicion, Alamgir went to Rajnagar Police Station on Monday and filed a general diary (GD), claiming that his wife had gone missing and had secretly left the country without informing anyone.

However, police became suspicious due to his inconsistent statements and unusual behaviour during questioning. Under intensive interrogation, he confessed to the murder and revealed where the body had been buried.

The body was recovered from the yard, and after the inquest, it was sent to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Police also arrested Alamgir Ali, Jalal Ahmad, Aminul Islam and Nurul Islam in connection with the case. Investigators are examining their possible involvement in the murder.

The victim and Alamgir had a six-year-old son.

Moulvibazar Superintendent of Police Monirul Islam said Alamgir confessed to killing his wife during questioning after filing the missing person’s GD. Based on his information, police recovered the body from the family yard. Police believe the murder was initially triggered by a domestic dispute, but are continuing the investigation to determine the exact motive and whether others were involved.
