Tk3,543cr housing project proposed for govt officials

The government has proposed a Tk3,542.77 crore housing project in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar to provide modern accommodation for public officials and employees.

The project, submitted by the Public Works Department (PWD) to the Planning Commission, envisages 1,512 flats in 42 10-storey buildings. The flats will range from 1,250 to 2,500 square feet.

The project, titled Housing for Government Officials/Employees in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, is proposed for implementation from March 2026 to February 2030.

Plans also include 2,838 parking spaces, a swimming pool, playground, school, college, mosque, market, community centre and dormitory, along with other civic facilities.

As the site is adjacent to the National Parliament complex, an expert panel from BUET, the Institute of Architects Bangladesh and other architectural professionals will review the plan to ensure it does not undermine architect Louis I Kahn’s original masterplan.

The Planning Commission has also asked the PWD to incorporate rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge and stronger fire-safety measures before resubmitting the proposal.

Officials said around 150,000 government employees work in Dhaka, but only 8–10% currently have access to government housing, leaving most dependent on costly private accommodation.
