The body of Shuvo Das of Satkhira, who was killed in an Israeli drone strike in Lebanon, has been brought back to Bangladesh, arriving at his family home in Sripatipur village of Kalaroa upazila on Sunday (6 September) morning.
According to his family, Shuvo was killed on 11 May in an Israeli drone strike in a conflict-hit area of southern Lebanon. His body was repatriated after nearly three months and 25 days.
The second of three brothers and a sister, Shuvo had moved to Lebanon around two and a half years ago in hopes of improving his family’s financial condition. His family had sold two decimals of their homestead to cover the cost of sending him abroad.
They had hoped he would earn enough in Lebanon to lift the family out of poverty. Instead, he returned home in a coffin.
Moin Uddin, counsellor at the Khulna divisional office of the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, said the government had already provided Shuvo’s family with a Tk85,000 cheque.
The family will receive another Tk300,000 this month, while additional financial assistance will be arranged later under the government’s life insurance scheme, he said.
With Shuvo’s death, three people from Satkhira have now been killed in Israeli drone strikes in Lebanon.
Earlier, Nahidul Islam of Ashashuni upazila and Shafiqul Islam of Bhalukachandpur village in Satkhira Sadar upazila were killed in similar attacks.
