Bangladesh Bank has raised the annual foreign exchange allowance for citizens travelling abroad, increasing the limit from $12,000 to $18,000 per adult.
Under the new rules, an adult Bangladeshi citizen can spend up to $18,000 or its equivalent in foreign currency during a calendar year.
The central bank issued a circular on Sunday (6 September) through its Foreign Exchange Policy Department, notifying all authorised dealers of the revised limit.
The circular, signed by Dr Md Abu Bakar Siddique, director (current charge) of the Foreign Exchange Policy Department, said the decision was taken to meet the genuine foreign currency needs of Bangladeshi travellers and in view of the growing demand for international travel.
However, the revised limit does not apply to minors below 12 years of age. They will continue to be eligible for up to 50% of the adult allowance.
The new rules also impose a limit on carrying US dollar notes in cash. A traveller can carry a maximum of $5,000 in cash within the overall annual allowance of $18,000.
The remaining amount may be used through cards or other authorised banking channels.
The circular said all other existing rules and instructions governing the release of foreign currency for overseas travel will remain unchanged.
The new directive takes effect immediately, and all authorised dealers have been instructed to inform their customers accordingly.
