HM Akhtar, New York: US Congressman Hakeem Jeffries has pledged to stand by Bangladeshi Americans during times of need, saying he would support the community in addressing crises, protecting their rights and accessing legal assistance.

He also stressed the need to ensure halal food options for Muslim students in schools.

Jeffries made the remarks as the chief guest at an event organised by the Muslim Ummah of North America (MUNA) Social Service in New York on Sunday afternoon local time.

The programme was chaired by MUNA Social Service Executive Director Arman Chowdhury. Among others present were Assistant Director Professor Dr Ruhul Amin, Abdullah Al Arif, Ahmad Abu Obaidah, Dr Jahangir Kabir and other prominent members of the community.

Jeffries said Bangladeshi Americans are an important part of American society and have been making valuable contributions in different fields.

“Their problems and needs will be given serious consideration,” he said, pledging to stand beside members of the community during times of difficulty.

He particularly assured support for Bangladeshi Americans requiring legal assistance, saying the protection of their rights and security was important and that efforts would be made to ensure they receive appropriate help when needed.

Highlighting the importance of education and student welfare, Jeffries also expressed support for ensuring halal food facilities in schools. He said educational institutions should provide appropriate facilities while respecting the religious and cultural values of Muslim students.

Speakers at the অনুষ্ঠানে said the younger generation would shape the future of society and the country and should therefore receive the support and educational resources necessary from the beginning of their academic lives.

They said providing school supplies to children from low-income and disadvantaged families could encourage them to continue their education. Such humanitarian and social initiatives could also strengthen mutual cooperation and solidarity within the community.

MUNA Social Service officials said the organisation carries out a range of humanitarian and social programmes, with particular emphasis on supporting children’s education, assisting poor families and standing beside people during times of need.

At the end of the programme, Congressman Jeffries distributed new school bags among students. The initiative brought visible joy to the children, several of whom expressed their excitement at receiving school bags directly from a member of Congress.

Parents also welcomed the initiative, saying such programmes could play an important role in promoting education, protecting community rights and supporting social development.

The organisers said they planned to expand their education and humanitarian assistance programmes in the future, with the aim of supporting disadvantaged people and helping build a stronger, more সচেতন and compassionate community.

A total of 600 school students received new school bags at the event.
