COX’S BAZAR: The Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) has detained three people after recovering 90,000 yaba pills and more than Tk36 lakh in cash during a raid at the residence of a police officer in Cox’s Bazar Sadar.

The raid was carried out in the Hazipara area on Monday morning, officials said.

DNC Cox’s Bazar Deputy Director Soumen Mondal said the operation was conducted at the residence of a police officer, identified as Shahid, who is currently posted at the Chattogram Judge Court, following intelligence information.

During the raid, DNC officials recovered 90,000 yaba pills and Tk36,20,850 in cash from the house.

The police officer’s brother-in-law, Momen Mehedi Ashik, Ashik’s wife Sadia, and another alleged associate were detained during the operation.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the three had been staying at the house allegedly to facilitate the trafficking of yaba through Cox’s Bazar, according to DNC officials. They are residents of Hnila Union in Teknaf upazila.

However, investigators said they could not immediately confirm whether the police officer was involved in the alleged drug trafficking. His possible connection to the case is being investigated.

Soumen Mondal said investigators were also examining the source of the recovered yaba and cash and whether the detainees had been involved in drug trafficking for a long period.

Legal proceedings, including the filing of a case under the relevant laws, were under way.

DNC officials said Cox’s Bazar has long been used as a major route for smuggling yaba to different parts of the country. Intelligence surveillance and operations against drug traffickers would continue, they added.
