A writ petition has been filed with the High Court challenging the legality of the government notification banning all activities of the Bangladesh Awami League and its affiliated organisations.
The petition was filed on Monday by Md Al Amin, a resident of Munshiganj, with lawyer Yunus Ali representing the petitioner.
The petition seeks a rule asking why the notification issued on May 12, 2025, banning the party’s activities should not be declared illegal and beyond the government’s legal authority.
Under the notification, the Awami League and its affiliated, associate and fraternal organisations were barred from all activities until the completion of proceedings against their leaders and activists before the International Crimes Tribunal.
The ban covers publications, media and online campaigns, rallies, meetings, conferences and other organisational activities.
