Bangladesh has sought stronger United Nations support to expand the deployment of its peacekeepers and police personnel in UN peacekeeping missions worldwide, highlighting the country’s longstanding contribution to global peace and security.
Home Affairs Minister Salahuddin Ahmed made the request during separate bilateral meetings with two UN under-secretaries-general at the UN Headquarters in New York on Monday, according to the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations.
In his meeting with UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the minister reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to UN peacekeeping and called for enhanced cooperation in deploying Bangladeshi police personnel.
He requested the early verification of Rapid Deployment Level (RDL) status for Bangladesh’s Formed Police Units (FPUs), greater deployment of Bangladeshi individual police officers, consideration of a Bangladeshi FPU in current and future UN peacekeeping missions, and more leadership and professional positions for Bangladeshi officers at both UN Headquarters and field missions.
Lacroix praised Bangladesh for its consistent and significant contributions to UN peacekeeping operations over the years and welcomed the country’s readiness to provide well-trained and professional personnel to meet the evolving needs of peace missions.
He also commended Bangladesh’s constructive role in advancing multilateral diplomacy within the United Nations.
In a separate meeting with UN Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support Atul Khare, Salahuddin Ahmed discussed logistical and operational preparations for Bangladesh’s planned deployment of specialised police units to Haiti.
The talks focused on contingent-owned equipment, transportation arrangements and reimbursement procedures related to the deployment.
Khare acknowledged Bangladesh’s valuable role in UN peacekeeping and peacebuilding efforts and assured continued operational support to facilitate the deployment of Bangladeshi personnel.
Bangladesh remains one of the world’s leading contributors to UN peacekeeping operations, with thousands of military and police personnel serving in missions across Africa, the Middle East and other conflict-affected regions.
