A total of 174 Bangladeshi nationals have returned home from Libya under a repatriation initiative by the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya, with support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
They arrived in Dhaka at 5:00 am on Tuesday aboard a Buraq Air flight.
Among them, 111 had been detained at the Tajoura Detention Centre in Tripoli, while 63 were held at the Ganfouda Detention Centre in Benghazi.
Before their departure, Bangladesh Ambassador to Libya Major General Md Habib Ullah saw the migrants off at Mitiga International Airport in Tripoli. The embassy’s labour counsellor and first secretary (labour) were also present.
The ambassador thanked the Libyan authorities and the IOM for supporting the repatriation process and expressed hope for continued cooperation.
He also briefed the returnees before departure, listened to their experiences, and encouraged them to rebuild their lives after returning home.
The ambassador urged the migrants to raise awareness about the risks, financial losses, and hardships of irregular migration. He also encouraged people to use legal migration channels in the future.
The returnees were further asked to assist law enforcement by providing information about human traffickers and trafficking networks to support legal action against those involved.
The Bangladesh Embassy in Libya said it continues to work closely with the Libyan government, the IOM, and other relevant organisations to repatriate Bangladeshi migrants who wish to return voluntarily or are being held in detention centres.
