Information Minister Andalib Rahman Partha has said the media deserves equal credit for Bangladesh’s progress in democracy and the country’s current position.
“Today, we are where we are because of the media. Given the role the media has played, I believe it deserves equal credit for our achievements and for the stage of democracy Bangladesh has reached, by the grace of Allah,” he said.
The minister made the remarks at an event marking the 31st founding anniversary of the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Thursday.
Partha said it was the first time since becoming a minister that he had attended a formal event and met journalists.
“Frankly speaking, this is the first formal event where I have met journalists since becoming a minister. So, I thank you,” he said.
The information minister assured journalists that the government would ensure a free media and would not interfere in journalism.
“Inshallah, you will have a free media, and we have no intention of interfering in the media or in your journalism in any way,” he said.
Partha also said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman believed Bangladesh could become the country of its dreams if everyone worked together.
“Our prime minister believes that if we all work together, Inshallah, Bangladesh will become the Bangladesh of our dreams, a golden Bangladesh,” he said.
