Five people were injured after plaster from the ceiling of the emergency department at Fulbari Upazila Health Complex in Dinajpur collapsed on Wednesday, triggering panic among patients and attendants.
The incident occurred around noon when a large section of the ceiling plaster suddenly fell, injuring an auxiliary staff member and two patients, according to hospital sources. The injured received primary treatment.
The collapse sparked panic in the emergency department, with patients and attendants rushing to safety.
The emergency unit was temporarily closed following the incident, while treatment was later shifted to an adjacent room.
The hospital building is reportedly very old and was constructed during the Pakistan period. It was previously used as a rural dispensary office before being converted into a health complex after independence.
Hospital officials said the building had undergone renovation about two years ago, but parts of the repaired ceiling have now also collapsed.
They said the matter has been reported to higher authorities.
“The building is very old, and we have to work with risks,” medical officer Sajedur Rahman Saju said, adding that patients are accommodated on the upper floor of the building.
Locals and patients have called for urgent renovation or replacement of the old structure, citing concerns over safety.
