Bangladesh reach Asian Games semi-finals

17 September 2026 10:06 Updated: 17 September 2026 10:06

Bangladesh advanced to the semi-finals of the women’s cricket event at the Asian Games after their quarter-final against China was abandoned due to rain in Japan on Thursday.

The match was scheduled to begin at 9am local time at Koryogi Athletic Park in Nisshin.

Although the rain stopped and sunshine returned, the outfield remained waterlogged following heavy showers, making play impossible.

Umpires inspected the ground three times, but conditions did not improve sufficiently for the match to start.

The available window for a 20-over game eventually expired, ruling out even the possibility of a Super Over.

Under the tournament rules, Bangladesh progressed on the basis of their higher ICC T20I ranking.

Bangladesh are ranked 10th, while China are 36th, giving Nigar Sultana Joty’s side the advantage when the match was abandoned.

Bangladesh will play their semi-final on September 20. India could be their opponents if they beat Japan in Friday’s quarter-final.

Bangladesh have previously won two silver and one bronze medal in women’s cricket at the Asian Games.
