A Supreme Court lawyer has served a legal notice seeking steps to divide the Dhaka District and Sessions Judge’s Court and the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court into two separate judicial zones—Dhaka North and Dhaka South.
Supreme Court lawyer Salahuddin Reagan sent the notice on Thursday to the law minister, secretary of the Law and Justice Division and registrar general of the Supreme Court, seeking necessary administrative, legal and judicial measures.
The notice calls for establishing or restructuring the Dhaka North District and Sessions Judge’s Court and Dhaka North Metropolitan Sessions Court, as well as the corresponding courts for Dhaka South.
It said the existing judicial structure needs to be reorganised considering Dhaka’s large population, extensive geographical area and growing caseload involving civil, criminal, family, special and metropolitan criminal matters.
The notice said the concentration of a large number of cases, litigants, lawyers, witnesses, accused persons and other stakeholders at the existing courts has placed considerable pressure on judicial administration.
As a result, it said, access to courts, case management and speedy disposal of cases are being hampered.
The recipients have been asked to take the necessary steps within 30 days of receiving the notice and inform the lawyer in writing.
The notice warned that a writ petition would be filed with the High Court if no appropriate action is taken within the stipulated period.
