The Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) has protested the killing of two Bangladeshis by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) in Pirganj, Thakurgaon, and called for an immediate end to killings along the border.
At a protest rally at Purana Paltan in Dhaka on Thursday, CPB President Kazi Sajjad Zahir Chandan claimed that at least 1,978 Bangladeshis have been killed by the BSF since Bangladesh’s independence.
He described the continued killings as serious crimes against humanity.
The rally was organised to demand an end to BSF killings and legal action against those responsible.
A procession was held through major city streets after the rally.
CPB General Secretary Abdullah Kafi Ratan said Bangladesh and India have historically maintained friendly ties between their peoples, but several issues continue to create tensions between the two countries.
He cited border killings and alleged push-ins, trade imbalance, cross-border smuggling and informal economic activities, sharing of common river waters, and regional connectivity as areas where Bangladesh’s interests need to be protected.
Ratan said such disputes should be resolved through justice, negotiations, diplomatic initiatives and mutual equality.
CPB Presidium Member Ragib Ahsan Munna said genuine bilateral friendship requires equal status, sovereign equality and respect for each country’s interests.
He said India’s position as a larger neighbouring country did not give it the right to disregard Bangladesh’s sovereignty, national interests or the rights of its people.
The CPB leaders urged the Bangladesh government to take effective measures to stop border killings, bring those responsible to justice and ensure accountability, while stressing equality and mutual respect in Bangladesh-India relations.
