Bangladesh and India have resumed discussions to finalise Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s planned visit to New Delhi, amid efforts to ease recent tensions between the two countries, The Hindu reported, citing diplomatic sources.
According to the report, officials from the two countries are continuing discussions in Dhaka and working on a possible agenda for the prime minister’s visit, which could take place at a mutually convenient time in November.
Restoring bilateral trade affected by political tensions and discussions on the Ganges water-sharing treaty could feature on the agenda.
The presence of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina in India has also remained a sensitive issue in Bangladesh-India relations. She has been in India since being ousted from power in 2024, while Dhaka has requested her return.
Meanwhile, Tarique Rahman congratulated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his 76th birthday last Thursday. In a social media message, he wished Modi good health and continued energy to serve the people of India. Modi thanked Tarique for his greetings and appreciated his message.
Tarique is scheduled to travel to New York next Monday to attend the United Nations General Assembly. He also has several diplomatic engagements scheduled for October and November.
The Hindu reported that efforts are underway to schedule his India visit at a convenient time in November.
In recent days, Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi has met several ministers and advisers of the Bangladesh government in Dhaka. Sources said the meetings were part of preparations for the visit and discussions on bilateral relations.
Earlier, India invited Tarique, as chair of BIMSTEC, to the BRICS summit in New Delhi. He did not attend, and Bangladesh did not send an official delegation. India’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal later said New Delhi had separately invited Tarique for a bilateral visit.
