Police detained 23 people during what authorities described as a secret meeting at Tejgaon College Jame Mosque in Dhaka’s Farmgate area on Friday, amid suspicions of links to militant activities.
The detainees were taken into custody at around 4:15pm following intelligence information about a gathering on the second floor of the mosque.
Police said around 25–30 people were reportedly attending the meeting.
Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Ibn-e-Mizan said the identities and backgrounds of those detained were being verified.
Officials from the Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) and the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit also joined the investigation.
Police said they were examining whether the detainees had any links to banned militant organisations.
The detainees were being held at Tejgaon Police Station while the authorities continued their verification and investigation.
Some reports cited preliminary police information suggesting possible links to a banned militant organisation, but officials said the identities and affiliations were still being verified.
