The Bangladesh Coast Guard has seized 1,260 bags of cement allegedly being smuggled to Myanmar in separate operations in Patenga and Banshkhali areas of Chattogram.
Two boats used for transporting the cement were also seized, while two suspected smugglers were arrested.
The Coast Guard disclosed the information in a press release on Friday.
According to the Coast Guard, its Patenga outpost conducted an operation in the outer anchorage area under Patenga Police Station at around 6:00pm Thursday.
During the operation, personnel searched a suspicious cargo boat and seized 750 bags of cement worth approximately Tk 375,000. Two suspected smugglers aboard the boat were also arrested.
In a separate operation, the Coast Guard contingent in Banshkhali searched a suspicious fishing boat near Bangla Bazar Ghat under Banshkhali Police Station at around 3:00am Friday.
The operation resulted in the seizure of another 510 bags of cement, valued at approximately Tk 280,500. However, those allegedly involved in the smuggling attempt managed to flee the scene.
Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon said legal proceedings against the seized cement, the two boats and the two arrested suspects are underway.
