Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury on Tuesday said Malaysia has reopened its labour market for Bangladeshi workers, following Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s recent official visit to the Southeast Asian nation.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen at the Sylhet Circuit House, the minister said the Malaysian labour market resumed accepting Bangladeshi workers from Monday, describing the move as a positive outcome of the government’s diplomatic engagement.
Ariful expressed optimism that additional overseas employment opportunities would emerge in the coming months as Bangladesh continues negotiations with various countries to expand labour migration.
“The government has been maintaining continuous discussions with different countries to create new employment opportunities and strengthen existing labour markets.
Malaysia reopened its labour market on Monday, and we hope other countries will follow gradually,” he said.
During the meeting, Ariful and Ambassador Christensen discussed Sylhet’s overall development, the significant contribution of Bangladeshi expatriates in the United States—particularly those from Sylhet—and prospects for enhancing bilateral trade, investment and broader economic cooperation.
The minister said Bangladesh and the United States have long shared warm and friendly relations, adding that both countries remain committed to deepening cooperation across trade, investment and other areas of mutual interest.
He expressed confidence that continued high-level engagement would further strengthen bilateral ties, promote economic collaboration and contribute to shared prosperity.
