Some 12.5 million cubic feet of gas per day (mmcfd) is set to be added to Bangladesh’s national grid today from Well No. 28 of the Titas Gas Field, operated by Bangladesh Gas Fields Company Limited (BGFCL).

Officials said another 55 mmcfd could be added within the next three to four months from Titas-29, Titas-30, Titas-31 and Bakhrabad-11 wells.

Once all five wells are completed, they are expected to supply up to around 67.5 mmcfd of additional gas to the national grid, officials said.

BGFCL General Manager (Operations) Engineer Md Ashraful Alam said State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources would inaugurate Titas-28 on Saturday, after which the well would be connected to the national grid.

“This will help increase gas supply from domestic sources and reduce pressure from import dependence,” he said.

Engineer AKM Jasim Uddin, project director of the “Drilling of Four Appraisal-cum-Development Wells in Titas and Kamta Fields” project, said drilling of Titas-28 was completed about a month ago.

The well is around 13,000 feet deep and is scheduled to go into production after its inauguration. The project, involving several wells including those at Titas, has an estimated cost of around Tk800 crore.

Meanwhile, drilling of Titas-31, a deep exploration well, began on April 19. Its current depth is around 4,920 metres against a target depth of 5,600 metres, with a variation of about 100 metres possible.

Project Director Md Mahmudul Nabab said drilling could be completed within the next two to three months if no geological complications arise.

If successful, Titas-31 could supply around 15 mmcfd of gas to the national grid, he said.

After Titas-31, BGFCL plans to begin drilling the Bakhrabad-11 deep well. The well has a target depth of 4,500 metres, with a variation of about 100 metres possible, and could supply around 10 mmcfd if drilling and testing are successful.

Officials estimate that Titas-29, 30 and 31 could collectively produce up to 45 mmcfd, while Bakhrabad-11 could add another 10 mmcfd. Including 12.5 mmcfd from Titas-28, the five wells could therefore contribute up to 67.5 mmcfd to the national grid.

Officials estimate the Titas field currently has around 1.5 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of remaining gas reserves. As Titas-31 is an exploration well, it could also help identify additional gas reserves.
