A 35-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death at a house near Khulna University in the city’s Harintana area early Saturday.
The deceased, identified as Azmal, son of Qutub of the Harintana area, was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital in critical condition around 1:35am. He died shortly after treatment began, hospital sources said.
Several young men brought Azmal to the hospital, claiming that he had been injured after jumping from the fourth floor of a building near Khulna University.
However, hospital sources said there were multiple injury marks on his body, while part of his hair had been shaved off. The men who brought him to the hospital left shortly after his death.
Local residents said they heard shouting around midnight and saw a man being beaten on the fourth-floor rooftop of a nearby building. They later found him lying on the ground and said those allegedly involved took him to the hospital by ambulance.
Harintana police officer-in-charge Iqbal Hossain said police had learned about the incident and that Azmal’s body was kept at the hospital morgue. Legal action would be taken if his family filed a complaint, he said.
Khulna University Student Affairs Director Prof Dr Md Salahuddin said the incident occurred outside the university area, at a rented house near the gate of Khan Jahan Ali Hall. The house is used as a hostel by former students of Khulna University, Gopalganj University and Northern University.
