A tourist drowned and two others were rescued after being swept away by strong currents while trying to retrieve a football at Sugandha Point of Cox’s Bazar beach on Friday evening.
The deceased was identified as Mofazzal Imam Seemanto, a resident of Kishoreganj.
Beach Workers In-Charge Mahabubur Rahman said a group of nine friends were bathing and playing with a football when the ball drifted into the sea. Three of them went after it but were suddenly swept away by strong currents.
Beach workers and Sea-Safe lifeguards rushed to the scene and rescued two of them, while Seemanto remained missing.
After a two-and-a-half-hour search, teams from the Fire Service, Sea-Safe Lifeguards and beach workers recovered his body from the Green Nature area near Sugandha Point.
Sheikh Mohammad Ali, officer-in-charge of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station, said the two rescued tourists were receiving treatment at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, while Seemanto’s body had been kept at the hospital morgue.
