Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will formally inaugurate the ‘Model Canal’ programme on November 19, Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu said on Saturday.
He made the remarks while addressing the inaugural session of the DRRO and PIO Conference 2026 at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) auditorium in Dhaka.
Dulu said canal excavation is an election pledge of the government. The programme will help boost cultivation during the dry season and improve water drainage during the monsoon, while fish farming in canals and tree planting along their banks will bring major changes to rural life.
He said the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has helped revitalise the rural economy through programmes including Food for Work, Cash for Work, Test Relief, General Relief, Vulnerable Group Feeding and canal excavation.
State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief M Iqbal Hossain urged officials to ensure that no funds allocated under the Annual Development Programme (ADP) are returned and that public money is not wasted.
The event was chaired by Disaster Management and Relief Secretary Mohammad Saiful Islam. Director General of the Department of Disaster Management Rezwanur Rahman delivered the welcome address.
DRROs and PIOs from across the country attended the conference.
