Opratim laid to rest

Ishayat Shahriar Opratim, the only son of Cumilla University Associate Professor Dr Nahida Begum and KM Firoz Shahriar, was laid to rest on Sunday amid grief and mourning.

Opratim was buried at a cemetery near his family home in Kotbari Gandhamati. His first namaz-e-janaza was held at Cumilla University at 10am, followed by another at Gandhamati at 11am.

According to family members, Opratim left his home in the Kotbari Gandhamati area at around 3:30pm on Friday to take photographs with friends using his mother’s iPhone. He could not be traced afterwards.

After searching for him at various locations, his father filed a general diary with Sadar Dakkhin Police Station on Friday.

Following his disappearance, family members, teachers and students of Cumilla University, and police searched for him in different areas.

Around 21 hours later, his body was recovered from a forested area in the Sananda area near the Lalmai hills adjacent to Cumilla University at around noon on Saturday.

The body was taken to Cumilla Sadar Hospital, where an autopsy was conducted. Police said there were signs of serious injuries to his head.

After the autopsy on Saturday night, Opratim’s body was taken to his family home in Kotbari Gandhamati. Relatives, teachers, students and local residents gathered there to pay their final respects, casting a pall of grief over the area.

Police have launched an investigation into his death. Several people have reportedly been detained for questioning in connection with the incident.

Police said they had obtained some clues and were working to determine the circumstances surrounding Opratim’s death.
