Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen paid a farewell call on Foreign Affairs State Minister Humayun Kabir at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday.
During the meeting, Kabir praised Yao Wen’s role in strengthening Bangladesh-China relations and thanked him for his contribution to making the prime minister’s visit to China a success.
Kabir said the ambassador’s activities during his tenure had been highly visible and that bilateral ties had been elevated to the level of a “shared community”. He added that institutional mechanisms had also been established to further strengthen communication between the two countries’ leaders and cooperation in foreign affairs and other areas.
A ministerial-level “2+2” mechanism is also expected to be launched soon, he said.
Yao Wen described his three years and nine months of service in Bangladesh as a great honour. He congratulated Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman on being elected president of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, calling it a proud moment for Bangladesh.
The ambassador said China would continue supporting Bangladesh’s development journey. He also said the minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China’s Central Committee was interested in visiting Bangladesh later this year.
Yao Wen also spoke about his family’s connection with Bangladesh, saying his father had served as China’s ambassador to Bangladesh and had presented his credentials to President Ziaur Rahman.
Kabir expressed hope that Bangladesh-China relations would become deeper and broader in the coming days. He thanked Yao Wen for his service and wished him success in his new assignment.
Kabir also said he hoped their paths would cross again in the future, adding that Bangladesh would remember Yao Wen’s tenure with appreciation.
