Three schoolboys went missing after entering the Meghna River to bathe in Sonargaon of Narayanganj on Sunday.

The incident occurred shortly before 1pm in the Bhati Bandar area. The boys could not be traced even after around one and a half hours of search efforts.

The missing students were identified as twin brothers Arifin, 15, and Ashikin, 15, sons of Md Faruk of Bari Majlis area under Mogorapara Union, and Abir, 14, son of Abdul Alin of the same area.

According to eyewitnesses and local residents, all three were students of Mogorapara HGGDS Smriti Government High School. The twins were in Class IX, while Abir was in Class VIII.

They reportedly left home in the morning saying they were going to school but instead went to the Meghna River with another friend to bathe.

Shortly after they entered the water, one of the four friends managed to get out, while the other three went missing.

A diving team from Dhaka has joined the search operation, said Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy director of Narayanganj Fire Service.

“Three of our divers are currently at the scene, and the rescue operation is underway,” he said.
