An International Crimes Tribunal has issued arrest warrants against four former officials of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of police, including its former chief Md Asaduzzaman, in a crimes-against-humanity case involving allegations of enforced disappearance, torture and killings during the previous Awami League government.
The three-member International Crimes Tribunal-1, headed by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, passed the order on Sunday. Justice Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Md Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury are the other members of the tribunal.
There are five accused in the case. Apart from Asaduzzaman, the three other CTTC officials facing arrest warrants are former inspectors Md Asaduzzaman and Md Mesbah Uddin Ahmed, and former sub-inspector Towhidul Islam Sumon.
Another accused, former CTTC Additional Deputy Commissioner Ishtiaq Ahmed, is already in custody.
The tribunal has fixed Oct 22 for the next hearing and directed that Ishtiaq Ahmed be produced before it on that day. It also ordered the authorities to arrest and produce the other four accused.
The formal charges in the case were presented before the tribunal on Sunday. Following an application by the prosecution, the tribunal took cognisance of the charges.
According to the formal charges, the accused allegedly kept Md Fakhrul Islam and his son Md Saiful Islam, Md Din Islam, Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun, Hafiz Abdullah Al Mamun and Md Surujjaman in secret detention on the seventh floor of the CTTC building in January 2023.
The charges also include allegations that Maulana Abul Hossain Al-Amin, former principal of Ibn Masud Madrasa in Gazipur city, was forcibly disappeared and killed in January 2023.
