Ahmadul Kobir, Malaysia: Former Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has been granted a conditional royal pardon, allowing him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028, subject to payment of a RM50 million fine.
The Legal Affairs Division under the Prime Minister’s Department announced the decision in a statement on Friday, saying it was made at the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya, held at Istana Negara.
According to the statement, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, consented to grant Najib a conditional pardon allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028.
Najib must strictly comply with all conditions attached to the pardon. If he breaches any of the stipulated conditions, the conditional pardon will be revoked and he will immediately have to return to prison to serve the remainder of his sentence.
Najib, 73, has been serving his prison sentence at Kajang Prison since August 23, 2022, following his conviction in the SRC International corruption case, involving the misappropriation of RM42 million.
He was sentenced to 12 years in prison and fined RM210 million in 2020. After exhausting his final appeal, he began serving the sentence in August 2022.
In early 2024, the Federal Territories Pardons Board reduced his prison term from 12 years to six years and his fine from RM210 million to RM50 million.
The latest decision allows Najib to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest rather than in prison, subject to the payment of the RM50 million fine and compliance with the conditions of the pardon.
The Legal Affairs Division did not disclose further details of the specific conditions governing his house arrest.
The decision relates to Najib’s SRC International conviction. He also faces other legal proceedings linked to the wider 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.
