The Minister of the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Liu Haixing, is interested in visiting Bangladesh by the end of this year, outgoing Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen said on Sunday.

Yao disclosed the plan during a farewell meeting with Bangladesh State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka.

According to a Foreign Ministry press release, the Chinese envoy said Liu has close ties with Bangladesh.

His father, Liu Shuchuing, served as China’s ambassador to Bangladesh in the 1980s and presented his credentials to then-President Ziaur Rahman in August 1980.

The proposed visit comes amid efforts to further strengthen Bangladesh-China relations.

During Yao’s tenure, the two countries elevated their ties to a “Community with a Shared Future,” while several new mechanisms, including a state minister-level 2+2 dialogue, are set to begin.

State Minister Kobir praised Yao for his role in strengthening bilateral relations and acknowledged his contribution to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s recent visit to China.

Yao, who has served as China’s ambassador to Bangladesh since January 2023, said it had been an honour to serve in the country for three years and nine months. He reaffirmed China’s continued support for Bangladesh’s development.

Liu Haixing had earlier met Bangladesh’s ambassador to China in Beijing in March, when the two sides discussed high-level exchanges, economic cooperation, trade, investment and people-to-people ties.
