CUMILLA: Three suspects arrested in the murder of 13-year-old Ishayat Shahriar Oprotim have given confessional statements before a court in Cumilla.
Their statements were recorded under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure on Sunday night by Abida Sultana Moli, judge of Cumilla Senior Judicial Magistrate Court No. 6.
The three accused were sent to Cumilla Central Jail around 9:45pm.
Police produced the suspects before the court around 9pm on Sunday. The three were identified as Saiful Islam Tuhin, Fahad and Kamrul.
Tuhin, from Sananda area of Cumilla Sadar Dakshin, has been identified by police as the prime accused and alleged mastermind. He dropped out of Cumilla City College in 2025 while studying in Class XI.
Kamrul, a Class IX student, lives in Ward No. 24 of Cumilla City Corporation, while Fahad is from Hatigara area of Cumilla Adarsha Sadar.
According to sources, all three confessed to beating Oprotim to death with bamboo sticks. They allegedly got into a scuffle with him after he refused to hand over the iPhone he was carrying. They then snatched the phone and beat him with bamboo sticks until he died.
Oprotim went missing after leaving his rented home in the Gandhamati area of Kotbari on Friday (Sept 18). His body was recovered from an isolated forest in the Lalmai hills in Sananda village of Bijoypur Union, Sadar Dakkhin, on Saturday afternoon.
Oprotim was a Class VII student at Cumilla Border Guard Public School.
His father, KM Firoz Shahriar, filed a murder case with Cumilla Sadar Dakkhin Model Police Station around 12:30am Saturday night, naming unknown persons as the accused. Police later arrested the three suspects based on information gathered during the investigation.
