Powerful Typhoon Dujuan is moving towards eastern Japan, bringing heavy rain to the Izu Islands and Kanto region, with warnings and evacuation orders issued in several areas.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has urged residents to remain alert for landslides, flash floods, overflowing rivers and strong winds, according to The Japan Times.
As of Monday afternoon (September 21), the typhoon was about 50km west of Hachijojima and moving northeast at 25km per hour. Its central pressure was 960 hectopascals.
Over the previous 24 hours, 565mm of rain was recorded in Izu-Oshima and 279.5mm in Kimitsu, Chiba. Up to 250mm of additional rainfall is expected in the Tokai, Kanto and Izu Islands through Tuesday afternoon.
The storm has also disrupted air and rail services. Japan Airlines cancelled 120 domestic flights, while All Nippon Airways cancelled 140. Train services were suspended on several lines in Chiba, Ibaraki and western Tokyo.
Several events have also been cancelled as the typhoon hit during Japan’s Silver Week holiday. Monday’s concert at the Rock in Japan festival and daytime programmes at the Tokyo Game Show were called off. Attendance at the Asian Games opening ceremony was also lower than expected.
The weather agency warned that heavy rain and strong winds could continue in parts of Japan through Wednesday, when the holiday period ends.
