Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has welcomed China’s initiative to support Bangladesh in combating cybercrime and strengthening the country’s technological capabilities.
Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen paid a farewell courtesy call on the home minister at his office at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Monday (September 21). They discussed security, law and order, cybercrime prevention, technological capacity-building and training cooperation.
At the meeting, Yao Wen said China had trained more than 100 Bangladeshi law enforcement personnel over the past two years in cybercrime, public security management, traffic and transport management, immigration and UN peacekeeping.
Salahuddin expressed gratitude for the cooperation and said the government was taking steps to establish a specialised cyber security unit in the police. Plans are also underway to establish digital forensic and cyber laboratories from police stations and district and divisional levels to a central unit.
The Chinese ambassador suggested sending a team of experts to Bangladesh to share technical expertise and facilitate visits to Chinese cyber laboratories.
In response, the home minister announced that a five-member high-level delegation led by an additional inspector general of police and comprising senior CID and cyber and digital forensic officials would visit China. The delegation will study Chinese cyber laboratories and technology and prepare specific proposals for forensic laboratories and equipment in Bangladesh.
Yao Wen also requested stronger security for Chinese citizens, businesses and investors working in Bangladesh. Salahuddin reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring their safety and security.
The meeting was also attended by Inspector General of Police Md Ali Hossain Fakir, Additional IGP and CID chief Barrister Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain and Additional Secretary Dr Ziauddin Ahmed, among others.
