Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members detained three people and seized a truckload of medicines allegedly being smuggled to Myanmar in the Tumbru border area of Naikhongchhari, Bandarban.
The three were detained during a special operation conducted around 9pm on Sunday near Customs Mor based on intelligence information, said Lt Col SM Khairul Alam, commander of Cox’s Bazar Battalion (34 BGB).
The detainees were identified as Harun Mia, 26, son of Mozammel Haque of Old Pallan Para in Teknaf; Jidan Barua, 18, son of Bipon Barua of Uttar Ghumdhum Barua Para in Naikhongchhari; and Md Aksar, 20, son of Md Joynal of the TNT area in Ukhiya.
According to the BGB, its Tumbru Border Outpost patrol team stopped a truck after finding its movements suspicious. A subsequent search uncovered a large quantity of medicines of various types, with an estimated market value of around Tk30 lakh.
The authorities suspect the medicines were being transported for smuggling into Myanmar.
The BGB is preparing an inventory of the seized medicines and other items and is taking steps to initiate legal action against the detainees under the relevant laws, Lt Col Khairul said.
He added that the BGB has intensified intelligence surveillance and special operations along the border to prevent drug trafficking, smuggling and other cross-border crimes.
