The Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association has held a meeting with the government to discuss raising bus fares following a Tk 20-per-litre increase in fuel prices.
The meeting began on Monday afternoon at the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) office in Banani, Dhaka, with representatives of bus owners, workers and other stakeholders attending.
The meeting is discussing how much bus operating costs have increased following the latest fuel price hike and how fares should be adjusted accordingly.
The owners’ association is expected to propose a fare increase of Tk 0.20 per kilometre.
The government on Sunday night raised the prices of four types of fuel by Tk 20 per litre.
The new price of diesel, widely used by buses and other public transport, has risen from Tk 115 to Tk 135 per litre.
However, no new bus fare has been finalised yet. A decision will be taken after consultations with all relevant stakeholders and completion of the fare adjustment process.
