DHAKA: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has called on the government to withdraw its decision to increase fuel prices. The party said that raising fuel prices by Tk 20 per litre at once would create a fresh crisis in people’s lives and significantly worsen their hardships.
Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar made the remarks in a statement sent to the media on Monday (September 21).
He said the government has been repeatedly increasing fuel prices, placing an additional financial burden on ordinary people.
“People are already struggling with the unchecked rise in the prices of essential commodities. The income-expense balance of low- and middle-income families has been disrupted, and people are struggling to meet household expenses. In this situation, the decision to increase fuel prices by Tk 20 per litre at once will create a new crisis and multiply their suffering,” Porwar said.
He also said the impact of the fuel price hike would not be limited to vehicle users. Since fuel is a key component of transportation and production, he said, higher fuel prices would increase agricultural production costs, transportation expenses, factory production costs, and the overall cost of doing business.
As a result, he said, prices of essential commodities and other goods in the market would also rise. Ultimately, he argued, the burden of these higher costs would fall on ordinary people.
