Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has arrived in New York to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, where he is scheduled to deliver his first address at the global forum on September 24.
He arrived at John F Kennedy International Airport at 6:20pm local time on Monday on a Turkish Airlines flight, accompanied by his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman and members of his delegation.
The five-day visit, from September 21 to 25, marks Tarique Rahman’s first visit to the UN General Assembly as prime minister and his first speech at the world body’s main forum.
According to the Foreign Ministry, his address is expected to cover Bangladesh’s democratic transition, the rule of law and accountability, global peace and security, climate change, sustainable development, economic cooperation, youth and women’s empowerment, education and healthcare, the Rohingya crisis, equitable use of modern technology and reform of the multilateral system.
The prime minister is also scheduled to hold meetings with representatives of major international businesses as part of the government’s economic diplomacy efforts. Discussions are expected to focus on Bangladesh’s investment prospects, manufacturing, infrastructure and technology sectors, human-resource development and employment opportunities for young people.
The Foreign Ministry has said the visit will provide an opportunity to present the government’s political commitments and vision for Bangladesh to the international community and to expand bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
Tarique Rahman is scheduled to leave New York for Bangladesh on September 25.
