The Group of Seven (G7) has called on Iran to end its military support and arms supplies to Yemen’s Houthi movement, warning that the assistance is contributing to a dangerous escalation that threatens international trade and global stability.
G7 foreign ministers issued the call after meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Monday. They condemned continued Houthi attacks in Yemen and against Saudi Arabia.
“We condemn in the strongest terms the unacceptable continued strikes carried out by the Houthis in Yemen and against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” the ministers said in a joint statement.
The G7 also urged the Houthis to immediately halt all military operations, threats and attacks against civilian shipping and return to the political process in good faith.
The G7 comprises the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan.
The appeal comes amid renewed fighting in Yemen and increased Houthi attacks targeting Saudi Arabia. The escalation has also raised concerns over the security of shipping routes in the Red Sea and the wider impact on international trade.
