Iranian Foreign Minister (FM) Abbas Araghchi has arrived in New York amid heightened tensions, ahead of President Masoud Pezeshkian’s visit to attend the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Iranian state media reported Tuesday that Pezeshkian left Tehran early in the morning for New York. He is expected to be the highest-ranking Iranian official to travel to the United States since the conflict in the Middle East began.
Araghchi left Iran on Sunday evening and made a stop in Qatar before continuing to New York. Iranian state media reported that several members of the delegation’s communications team were denied US visas.
After arriving in New York, Araghchi spoke by phone with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, with the two discussing issues related to the General Assembly session.
“Our most important objective is to use an important international platform to defend the legitimacy, rights and interests of the Iranian people,” Araghchi told Iranian journalists.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said Araghchi would meet with officials and foreign ministers from several countries attending the UN session.
The United States has allowed the Iranian delegation to travel to the country for the General Assembly but has imposed certain restrictions. The US State Department said the Iranian delegation would not be permitted to purchase certain goods, including luxury items, while in New York.
Meanwhile, Iran has reportedly conveyed conditions to the United States through Qatari mediators regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran has effectively closed the strategic oil and gas shipping route since the conflict began, while the United States has imposed a counter-blockade around Iranian ports. Source: IRNA.
