Two jewellery traders were shot in the legs as a group of armed robbers allegedly snatched 25 bhori of gold and Tk40,000 from them in Keraniganj, Dhaka, on Monday night.
The incident took place at Matbarnagar intersection in Hazratpur under Keraniganj Model Police Station around Monday night.
The injured were identified as Antor Chandra, 25, and his maternal cousin Rajib Chandra.
According to locals and police, Nittai Chandra, a resident of Atipara village in Singair upazila of Manikganj, owns a jewellery shop called ‘Ritu’ at Hazratpur Bazar.
After closing the shop for the day, his son Antor and nephew Rajib were returning home to Atipara by autorickshaw, carrying 25 to 30 bhori of gold and Tk30,000 to Tk40,000 in cash in two bags.
When the autorickshaw reached Matbarnagar intersection in Ward No. 6 of Hazratpur Union, five unidentified men riding two motorcycles intercepted it.
The robbers forced the two traders out of the vehicle before firing several shots from pistols and exploding crude bombs, police and locals said.
Both Antor and Rajib sustained gunshot wounds to their legs and fell to the ground.
The attackers then grabbed a bag containing 25 to 30 bhori of gold and another containing cash before fleeing the scene.
Locals rescued the injured traders and took them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital that night for treatment.
Additional Superintendent of Police of Keraniganj Circle Md Jamilul Haque and Keraniganj Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Ruhul Quddus visited the scene after being informed of the incident.
Ruhul Quddus said the two injured traders were out of danger.
He said preparations were underway to file a case against those involved, adding that police surveillance and intelligence efforts were continuing to identify and arrest the suspects.
