Bus fares on long-distance and city routes have been increased by 17 poisa per kilometre following the latest rise in fuel prices.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Road Transport and Highways Division on Tuesday (September 22).
The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) had proposed on Monday raising fares by 20 poisha per kilometre on long-distance routes and 18 poisha for city services.
Diesel prices were increased by Tk15 per litre in April, prompting an 11-poisha-per-kilometre rise in bus fares at the time.
Before Tuesday’s latest increase, bus fares in Dhaka and Chattogram metropolitan areas stood at Tk2.53 per kilometre, while the rate for minibuses was Tk2.42.
On long-distance routes, the fare for a 52-seat bus had been Tk2.23 per kilometre. However, many non-AC long-distance buses have reduced their seating capacity to 40 or fewer to provide passengers with more space and comfort, resulting in higher fares.
Passengers also have to pay additional charges for bridge and road tolls.
The fares will now be revised to reflect the latest 17-poisa-per-kilometre increase.
