The Election Commission (EC) has postponed its planned dialogue with registered political parties over the upcoming local government elections.
The talks were scheduled to begin on Wednesday and continue in three phases on September 23, 24 and 25. The EC’s Public Relations Division confirmed the postponement on Tuesday.
Md Abdul Momin Sarker, director of the Public Relations Division, said the dialogue would be arranged after the commission finalises its plan for the local government elections.
“Further action will be taken once instructions are received,” he said.
Earlier, Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah had said that the EC would hold discussions with all registered political parties from September 23 to 25 to seek their cooperation in holding the local government elections smoothly.
The commission had initially planned to begin the local government elections with Union Parishad polls in November. A tentative plan had proposed November 12 as the starting date, with the elections to be held in several phases.
However, following discussions with government ministries and agencies, the EC has moved away from the November-December timeline, citing annual examinations and other logistical considerations. January is now being considered as a possible period for the Union Parishad elections, although no final schedule has been announced.
