Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) plans to perform two liver transplants every month at its Super Specialized Hospital, with four more patients currently being prepared for the procedures, Vice-Chancellor Prof FM Siddiqui said on Tuesday.
The university has so far successfully completed six liver transplants, including two in September 2025 and four in July and September this year.
The procedures were carried out under government funding and were provided free of charge to the patients.
Prof Siddiqui said the university is targeting 24 liver transplants a year, or an average of two every month.
Two more procedures are expected to be performed between October 10 and 12, with four patients already prepared.
According to the vice-chancellor, a liver transplant that may cost around Tk 1 crore abroad can be performed at BMU for about Tk 30-35 lakh, with the cost expected to decline further.
He said the procedures are being conducted at less than half the cost in neighbouring countries.
He also said the government would continue funding such procedures free of charge until 2027.
BMU said 19 specialised departments of the university were involved in the six completed transplants, while a team of specialists from the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG) Hospital in Hyderabad provided technical assistance.
The university said donor-recipient relationships, medical suitability and required documents are verified through multiple stages to prevent financial transactions and irregularities.
A hospital board conducts a further review before approval.
Prof Siddiqui said regular liver transplant services would help develop local expertise and eventually enable Bangladeshi specialists to perform such procedures at other centres across the country.
